Dear Parents,
Wow! We are off to an excellent start this year. What a nice and fun group of students I have! We have been working hard to learn about each other, our routines, and procedures.

We have participated in a fire drill and a lockdown. The students did a wonderful job on both. They were very responsible!

This Wednesday, August 30, 2017 is our second grade Parent Night at 6:00pm in room 22. I am looking forward to seeing my student's parents and discussing the upcoming school year.

Have a fantastic week.

Dear Parents and Families,
Wow! the students did a wonderful job with their entire habitat study. They worked extremely hard and had fun, too. I loved their reports, presentations, and song. I have to admit, I got tears in my eyes!

Please encourage your children to keep reading throughout the summer. I truly believe that is the very best educational activity for them. They will learn so much on their own.

Thank you again for sharing your charming children with me this year! I have loved it and will miss them. Thank you for all of your help and support in so many ways. Please enjoy your summer and relaxation.

End of the year!

Dear Parents and Families,
Wow! I can't believe the end of the school years is coming up so quickly. We are very busy with regular work, end of the year assessments, and our habitat study! Your children have matured so much. They are sweet and adorable, inquisitive learners!

Thank you very much for your wonderful help with our rain forest habitat. There is so much to do and I truly appreciate your many different ways of helping. Your children love it, too. I know they are having a great time, learning about animals, conservation, learning researching skills, which can be frustrating at times, being creative, and continuing to write unique, charming stories blended into their reports.

They enjoyed writing their invitations to our habitat presentations and designing their own borders.  I hope by having a morning and afternoon presentation time you will be able to come see one of them.

The students have drawn their animals in a simple outline and will be coloring their drawing onto the-shirts they will wear over their clothes for the habitat presentations. They will get to keep the shirts as their end of the year present. 😊

I certainly have had a wonderful year with your children! Thank you all so much.

Dear Parents and Families,

Spring is here and the students have been working so hard and so well! They are learning about money and using their addition and subtraction skills in solving problems and figuring out amounts. When we return from our break, the students will work on a district math assessment called Aquarium Design. I am sure they would enjoy discussing their thinking each day, as they progress through their steps in solving the problem.

The students will practice their fluency skills with reader's theater. We will choose scripts and parts this coming week and will prepare for a presentation. I can't wait to see them in action! On that day, we will combine a reader's theater presentation with a literacy celebration, so that your child can also share with you the books they have published at school. We are working on a date and will let you know soon.

We will start our unit on habitat. Our class will be studying the rainforest. Watch for a sign-up letter the week after break. We would love to have you help the students research rainforest animals and/or create them with paper mache. Please send newspapers to school to help with this, if you have any.
I know the students will love this investigation!

I hope you are having a great break with your wonderful children!

AJ's Walking Feld Trip

Dear Parents,

We had a great Halloween party yesterday. Thank you to all of the parents who helped with it! The students sure had a lot of fun! A big thank you to Mendi for organizing everything! I appreciate all of you so much.

Tomorrow is our first field trip of the year. It will be wonderful to be out in the fresh air and sunshine as we walk to AJ's. The students will be learning about running a business and going behind the scenes to get an up-close look at how it works. I think it will be very interesting.

It is hard to believe it is November already! I enjoyed getting to know you all better at the Fall conferences. The students are progressing well and working hard.

Upcoming Fire Muster

Dear Parents,

Wednesday is our Fire Muster. It begins at 9:00 am. The students are really looking forward to it. Please help them dress appropriately as today's note explained.

We have been working on learning how to conduct successful Writer's and Reader's workshops. The students are doing very well. Their goal is to work quietly and stay on task so that everyone can concentrate and work most effectively. Students become better readers and writers by having dedicated time to spend reading and writing.

I will be working with guided reading groups during their Reading Workshop time and conferencing with individuals during the students' Writing Workshop time. Thank you for all of your support and help. I truly appreciate it!

Second Grade News

Dear Parents,

It is so fun teaching second grade this year. We are off to a fantastic start! We are finishing up our beginning of the year assessments and I will be sharing the results with you at conferences. I am looking forward to talking to you and your child.

Our Fire Muster is on Wednesday, October 19th. at 9:00 a.m. It will be my first one. I am sure the students will enjoy it!

I am working on our volunteer opportunities and will be contacting volunteers soon.  We will be ready to begin after Fall Break.

The students have been having a wonderful time participating in science experiments investigating the three states of matter.

They are working on writing exciting beginnings for stories to "hook" the reader. The students have very imaginative ideas and enjoy writing workshop.

The students are working on math inquiries using smart board investigations, strategies to solve word problems, writing equations, playing math games, and making use of manipulatives.

I am so proud of the students' focus during reading workshop time. They are learning to "read to self" and "read to someone" quietly, and take turns asking each other comprehension questions.  They are choosing "good fit" books, gaining meaning through reading, and checking for understanding. They are reading daily. Please continue to encourage your children to read at home.

It is very important to sign up for ParentVUE so you can view grades and see report cards. Noah and our specialist teachers will be hosting a ParentVUE Minute Clinic during conference week. A table will e set up by the front gate and staffed from 12:30-3:45. This is a place where parents can stop by for quick assistance setting up their parentVUE accounts.

Thank you so much for sharing your children with me. We are having an excellent time learning together!
